Image description

A View of the Mansion House at Turnham Green. Belonging to the Right Honorable John Lord of Egmont. around 1765-1770 A bird's-eye view of extensive formal gardens and an Italianate house; fields and trees surrounding the house and gardens; hills and forest land in the distance. Title inscribed in ink in a decorative shield in the lower right-hand corner. Bears a coat of arms and the Perceval motto 'Sub Cruce Candida' in the lower left-hand corner. The Mansion House at Turnham Green was conveyed to John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont (1711-1770) in 1765. This drawing must date from the five years when Egmont owned the property and estate. The house became known as Heathfield House after 1789 when it was sold to George Augustus Eliott, Lord Heathfield. This drawing and that at Maps K.Top.30.18.b. depict the house and gardens from an almost identical viewpoint. The only significant difference between the two works is the location of the title and coat of arms. Source/Shelfmark: Maps K.Top.30.18.a 1 drawing: pen and black ink with monochrome wash; sheet 50.3 x 70 c.
