Image description

The war memorial consists of a granite wall with central curved screen and a rectangular plinth and stepped base. On the plinth is a bronze sculpture showing a large group of men marching into battle behind a pair of drummer boys on the left, and smaller boys marching alongside the group, carrying kit bags and supporting the group. The men are in varying stages of uniform, with some appearing to be dressed in their work clothes with flatcaps. Near the centre a man hugs a woman goodbye, and at the head of the group a winged angelic figure plays a horn and moves with the group. On the plinth the following is inscribed: "NON SIBI SED PATRIE/ THE RESPONSE". This memorial was designed by Sir W. Goscombe John, erected to remember the Territorial Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers, and was unveilied in 1923. The image has been subjected to a restricted field of view and vignetting, which has created the dark circle that frames the image.
