ALBANIAN BOYS WITH TOY PISTOLS AND KLA HEADBANDS, 1999-06-18 (photo)

A group of Kosovo Albanian youngsters totting toy pistols and UCK (KLA) headbands stop while they walk through the streets of Gnjilane June 17 evening. The townspeople of Gnjilane are out circulating on the streets after months of being inside due to the threat of attack by their Serb neighbors and police. Many townspeople said that June 17 was the first day they were able to freely circulate through town since the beginning of the war, due to the security presence of the US Marines operating under the NATO peace keeping force mandate. Most of the town's approximate 15 percent Serb population have left town when the Marines took control. JWH/ME
