Araucano Indian women grinding corn and spinning, Chile, 1820-1821. Lithograph by G Scharf; the woman in the centre is grinding maize in the traditional method used in Central and South America since pre-Columbian times. The woman on the right is spinning thread with a spindle. The portable Arauco house behind was 'easily removed from one place to another; for effecting which the inhabitants help each other.'
