Arthur Charles Clarke (b 1917) was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research. Here, at about 11 years old, he is sitting in a horse- drawn cart with his sister Mary and a friend, George James. Arthur's brother Fred is standing beside the horse. The woman leading the horse is possibly Mrs James and the photograph was taken by her husband. The picture was probably taken at Ballifants, the farm in Somerset where Arthur grew up.
