This artificial heart was transplanted by the cardiologist team at the Schiller University Hospital in Jena, Germany, 22 April 2002. The successful operation took six hours. The 62-year-old patient could be disconnected from artificial respiration only 22 hours after the operation. The artificial organ of the 'lionheart' type offers the advantage of being fully implantable which reduces mortal infections. Jena is one of only nine centres worldwide that applies this new technology.
