Image description

Charles Green, English aeronaut, c 1830s. Lithograph by Mellinet of Green (1785-1870) who in 1821 made the first ascent with carburetted hydrogen gas. He built the 'Nassau' balloon and flew from Vauxhall Gardens in London to Weilburg, Nassau, in Germany, in 1836. Together with his passengers Robert Holland, MP, and Thomas Monck Mason, he successfully completed the world's longest flight covering an estimated 480 miles in 18 hours. The route took them over Kent via Canterbury and Dover, before crossing the English Channel, and flying over Calais and Liege to land in Weilburg. He also invented the guide-rope, and made 526 ascents between 1821and 1852. From the Penn-Gaskell Collection at the Science Museum, London. Dimensions: 218mm x 260mm. ©SSPL/Science Museum
