The insignia of the United States of America is hanging damaged outside the front gate of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing May 10, 1999 following protests against NATO's strike on the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. China on Sunday marked quietly the sensitive first anniversary of the NATO bombing of its embassy in Yugoslavia. The bombing, which killed three Chinese people and sparked anti-NATO demonstrations across China, took place on May 7 in Belgrade, or early on May 8 in Beijing time.
