DAVID LEVY SPEAKS IN JERUSALEM, 1999-07-07 (photo)

Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy addresses the ministry's staff in this July 7, 1999 file photo. Levy resigned August 2, 2000 from Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government, accusing him of conceding too much on Jerusalem at peace talks with the Palestinians. Levy, 62, had threatened to resign if Barak did not take serious moves towards forming a broad, or unity, government. His resignation increased pressure on Barak, who is already reeling from blows dealt by the failure of last month's Camp David peace summit and the defection of three coalition partners which deprived him of his parliamentary majority. Levy seemed unhappy he was not playing a larger role in the peace process and had refused to attend the Camp David peace talks. JDP
