"Etude optique, schemas decrivant les spectres, lentilles trajectoire de la lumiere et relations avec la vision". Optics, 10 December 1850. Hand-coloured engraved plate by John Emslie illustrating the science of optics. Various figures show how light is bent and focussed using different types of lenses and their application in the telescope. Other illustrations explain the formation of a rainbow, reflection and refraction along with the working of the magic lantern (projector), camera obscura and the eye. Taken from a series of books called 'Introduction to natural philosophy, comprising a popular account of the properties of bodies; mechanical powers; motion and machinery. The sciences of hydrostatics; hydraulics; pneumatics; acoustics; optics; electricity; magnetism and chemistry. Published and probably written by James Reynolds of 174 Strand in London in 1850 in response to the popular demand for information on the developments taking place in science and engineering as a result of the Industrial Revolution. ©SSPL/Science Museum
