Video description

The various footage within this film which is in 2 clear sections, illustrate both colonial and traditional Burmese village life. The Europeans attend markets, have their photos taken, run timber yards and engage in ventriloquism as part of their social life. The local Burmese are undertaking labour activity, such as working in oil-fields, selling agricultural produce, and construction, as well as enjoying a social life with dancing and community celebration. (06. 10 to 07.15) Broad river in flat, open countryside. Elephant driver sits on his elephant's back while it washes itself in the river. Then slowly climbs out of the river up a slipway. (07.17 to 07.58) Footage of an official government boat (a single funnel steamer) in calm coastal waters. Government official, dressed formally in white, leaves the boat on an official visit. (08.00 to 09.28) Various shots of Burmese village life. Children are dancing along the street to the accompaniment of walking men playing side drums. A gang of youths then dance down the street with colanders and other kitchen utensils on their heads. Bullock cart with tender proceeds along a palm tree lined road. (10.20 to 10.56) A busy city street. Bullock and hand carts pass along with cargo of bricks and construction materials, while in the background there is an arrangement of iron girders, which show a tall building in the course of construction [skyscraper?]. (11.01 to 12.29) Inspection of a standing steam locomotive by an Indian engineer. Then sequence of mine head where ore is brought to surface by conveyer belt and then washed in pit head buildings.
