Haile Selassie at a reception, c 1938 A photograph of Emperor Haile Selassie I (1892-1975) of Ethiopia at a reception, taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper in about 1938. Expelled from his country by the Italian invasion of 1935, Haile Selassie went into exile in Britain. He returned to his throne, with British help, in 1940. Selassie attempted to modernise his country, abolishing slavery and issuing a written constitution. Outside his country he was regarded by followers as a holy figure, inspiring the Rastafarian religion. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
