HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS BIENG ESCORTED OUT OF CONGRESS MEETING, 2000-06-21 (photo)

A human rights activist and family member of an alleged victim of the dictatorship is being escorted by police out of a congress meeting in Valparaiso, June 21. The Chilean congress is debating on a bill that would guarantee confidentiality to those who turn in information on the whereabouts of people disappeared during the 1973-1990 dictatorship. Several human rights organization fear that this bill would resolve in impunity for those responsible for human rights abuses during the rule of former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet. The meeting was interrupted when human rights activists started to shout slogans until they were taken away by the police. CD/jp
