ISLAMISTS OPPOSED TO PEACE WITH TRIBAL REBELS MARCH IN DHAKA, 1997-11-28 (photo)

Thousands of radical Islamists opposed to any peace accord with tribal rebels in Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong Hill Tracts stage a noisy march in Dhaka, chanting "No deal with the terrorists," November 28. Organised by Islamic Constitution Movement, the protesters took to the street as government and rebel negotiators were continuing talks in Dhaka to work out a peace deal to end 25 years of insurgency, which so far claimed at least 8,500 lives. The country's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Begum Khaleda Zia, has threatened to call for a national shutdown if the treaty is signed. BANGLADESH PEACE
