James G. Birney, American abolitionist, politician, and lawyer from Kentucky. He evolved from a slave owning Alabama planter in 1820, to a nationally prominent abolitionist in 1840. In Cincinnati he published anti-slavery journal, THE PHILANTHROPIST until 1836, when he moved to New York as an officer member of the American Anti-Slavery Society.
