Jun 06, 1953 - Christie Trial Continues At Old Bailey. Doctors Clash: Doctors for the defence and prosecution clashed this afternoon at the Old Bailey trial of John Regineld Holliday Christie. Christie, standing trial on a charge of murdering his wife Ethel, is pleading insanity. First, Dr. J.A. Hobson, psychiatrist at the Middlesex Hospital, sazid: “Christie is sufferening from gross hysteria”. Probably, he said, Christie did not know he was doing wrong when he killed. Second, Dr. J.C.M. Matheson, Brixton Prison's chief medical officer said “I think Christie is sane”. Third, Dr. Desmond Curran,” (Illegible)” at St. George's Hospital said,” I would regard Christie as a highly abnormal character rather than a victim of disease.
