Lucien Vidie, French inventor, 1795. Portrait of Lucien Vidie, the inventor of the aneroid ('fluidless') barometer. The idea of a fluidless barometer, opposed to one using using mercury, was first suggested by Gottfried Willhelm Leibniz in 1698 but it was not until 1843 that Vidie completed his model.
