Image description

Heather Urquides, a reporter for the Arizona Daily Star, answers reporters questions after witnessing the gas chamber execution of German citizen Walter LaGrand March 3 at the Arizona State Prison. LaGrand died at 9:30 p.m. MST, eighteen minutes after the procedure began. He was convicted of murdering Ken Hartsock, a bank manager in Marana, Arizona in 1982. His brother Karl was also convicted of the same crime and was executed February 24 by lethal injection. The LaGrand's were the first Germans executed in the United States since World War II. There are two more German citizens on death row at the prison. JT/CLH/
