Image description

Passengers of the Past: Admiral van Tromp', LNER poster, 1929. Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), showing the famous 17th century figure, Admiral Van Tromp (1598-1653) holding a broom, with a suitcase by his side, preparing to board a modern-day steamer ship. Van Tromp led the Dutch navy in the Anglo-Dutch wars of 1652. He became famous for nailing a broom to a ship's mask, symbolising a sweeping victory. Artwork by Austin Cooper (1890-1964), a Canadian who studied art in Cardiff and Arbroath. He began his career as a commercial artist in Montreal, but returned to London in 1922 and designed posters for LNER, Indian State Railways and London Transport. His first show was held at the London Gallery in 1948. ©SSPL/NRM/Pictorial Collection
