POLICE AND PROTESTERS CLASH IN MANILA AGAINST THE U.S. ARMED FORCES, 1999-05-07 (photo)

A Filipino policeman (L) swings his baton while dispersing a group of militant students in front of the U.S. embassy in Manila May 7, who were protesting against an agreement on the resumption of military exercises between the United States and the Philippines. The group tried to go near the embassy to post a sign that read "Notice of Eviction against the United States government." The Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) is currently being deliberated and once ratified, the agreement will allow American troops to hold military exercises in the country. RR/JIR
