Image description

Prince Albert, Consort of Queen Victoria, 1860. Carte de visite full-length photographic portrait of Prince Albert (1819-1861) by John Mayall. Prince Albert (1819-1861), son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Germany, married his first cousin, Victoria, Queen of Great Britain (1819-1901), in 1840 and was given the title of Prince Consort in 1857. He is largely remembered for his patronage of the arts and his encouragement of social and industrial reforms. He planned and managed the Great Exhibition of 1851, whose profits funded the building of the South Kensington museums in London. He died suddenly of typhoid in 1861, and the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens was erected in his memory ten years later. ©SSPL/Science Museum
