PROTESTORS RAISE SLOGANS AGAINST CUSTODY DEATHS IN KASHMIR, 1997-11-04 (photo)

Protestors raise slogans during a strike in Srinagar, summer capital of India's Jammu and Kashmir state on November 3. The strike was called by the All Parties Hurriayat (Conference), Kashmir's main separatist alliance, to protest the alleged killing of youths in police custody. Hurriyat blamed Indian security forces of killing of at least 360 people in custody, a charge denied by police. About a dozen militant groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or merger with neighbouring Pakistan since 1990. Police and hospital sources say more than 20,000 people have died in the seven year old insurgency. KASHMIR ARRESTS
