Dr. Ken Edgett, scientist at Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, speaks during a press conference on Mars in Washington June 22. Edgett is responsible for selecting and examining images taken from the Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera, from which scientists recently observed features that suggest there may be current sources of liquid water at or near the surface of the red planet. Astronomers said on Thursday they had found convincing evidence that water flows on the surface of Mars, a finding that makes it much more likely that life could exist or could have existed on the planet.
