The Short-Mayo S. 20 seaplane 'Maia' (G-AHDK) landing. The seaplane carries a rack on its fuselage which its designer Major R.H. Mayo intended to carry a second smaller plane that would carry the cargo. The aircraft were supposed to part once they had reached their cruising height. This method was intended to increase the range of the smaller craft and to facilitate non-stop crossings of the Atlantic. The first tandem flight took place in 1938. 20 'Maia'/S. 21 'Mercury', 1937
