SIERRA LEONE WAR VICTIM SITS IN CAMP FOR AMPUTEES, 1999-10-08 (photo)

Sierra Leone war victim Finnah Dabo sits in front of her tent October 7 in camp in Freetown for amputees and other victims of civil war atrocities. Dabo, whose left hand was amputated by rebels, lives in the camp with her husband and two children. A two-year-old son went missing during a rebel invasion of Freetown in January. Rebels had lined up Dabo and eight relatives and amputated them in turns. One of them was her grandfather who died on the spot. One of the rebel leaders, Johnny Paul Koroma, whose followers are blamed for atrocities, met a hostile reception when he visited the camp October 5 to offer apologies and ask for forgiveness.
