SOUTH KOREAN PROTESTERS CHANT ANTI-US SLOGANS IN SEOUL, 2000-05-25 (photo)

A South Korean University student chants anti-U.S. slogans during a protest march to the U.S embassy in Seoul May 25. Some hundreds of protesters demanded an apology from the U. S. for the allegedly killing of civilians during the early days of the 1950-53 Korean War. They also demanded the U.S. actively accept South Korea's demand for a revision to the South Korea-U.S. agreement on the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) towards granting more power to South Korean law enforcement authorities in criminal and other cases involving U.S. soldiers. United States stations some 37,000 troops in South Korea which is technically at war with communist North Korea. The picket reads,"Revise the unfair SOFA which promotes crimes of U.S. soldiers. LJW/DL
