Image description

Stereo daguerreotype of a young girl, c 1855. A hand coloured stereoscopic daguerreotype portrait of a young girl holding a tennis racket, taken by Thomas Richard Williams in about 1855. WIlliams began his photographic career as an assistant to Antoine Claudet (1797-1867). In 1850 he established his own studio in Regent Street, London. In 1832, Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) first established the principles of stereoscopy. A stereograph is a pair of photographs which, when viewed through a stereoscope, give the appearance of three-dimensional depth. Stereoscopic photography became very popular in the 1850s and 1860s - particularly after it was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
