STREET THEATRE PERFORMERS INTERPRET POLITICAL SATIRE IN MEXICO CITY, 1998-03-27 (photo)

A group of street theatre actors perform a political satire on an improvised stage in Mexico City's central district March 27 as part of the city center's festival. The performers' costumes and improvisation technique are drawn from Mexican lithographies from the 19th century which were used to satire the government of dictator Porfirio Diaz. The lithographies were one of the few means of political comment and dissention under the Diaz's iron rule, and the performers were using this method of performance as a way of commenting that things have not changed so much in 100 years.
