A powerful earth quake rocked western India on Friday, killing more than 500 people and throwing the country's Republic Day public holiday into confusion, reports from the area said. The quake, measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale by the U.S. Geological Survey, was the region's most intense in half a century, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
