THE EDEN PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION IN CORNWALL, 2001-02-19 (photo)

The project, consisting of two huge geodesic conservatories, or Biomes, is the largest structure of its type in the world covering an area the size of 35 football pitches and will house plants from all over the world in a strictly controlled environment free from chemicals and pesticides. The Biomes' will contain areas of tropical rainforest, as well as temperate region species, planted in soil recycled from the china-clay pit where the site is situated. The Eden project is due to be opened to the public on March 17. IW/BR
