Image title
The very famous island of Mad-head, lying in the sea of shares' 1720. This fampus cartographical political satire was published in the aftermath of the collapse of the French Compagnie de la Louisiane ou d'Occident, and of similar English and Dutch overseas companies. This engraving is sometimes attributed to Henri-Abraham Chatelain. The scene on the left, labelled 'Quinquempoix Beplystert' ('Quinquempoix Besieged') depicts the headquaters of the Compagnie under sieg by unhappy investors. The island of Mad-head is shaped like a man's head. The islands's rivers are named afterthe principle rivers of the capital cities of the countries involved in the scheme. 'Z.Z. have', alludes to the English South Sea scheme.
