Image description

attributed to Sir Henry Raeburn, RA (Stockbridge 1756 – Edinburgh 1823). Oil painting on canvas, Lieutenant-General Sir Hildebrand Oakes, 1st Bt GCB (1754-1822), attributed to Henry Raeburn, RA (Stockbridge 1756 – Edinburgh 1823), in the style of George Romney. Eldest son of Lieutenant-Colonel Hildebrand Oakes (1733–1797), late of the 33rd Foot, and his wife, Sarah (d. 1775), the daughter of Henry Cornelison of Braxted Lodge, Essex. He was a member of the consolidated board of general officers, and one of the commissioners of the Chelsea Hospital and the Royal Military College. He died, unmarried. Portrait of a mature man, almost half-length, turned to the left, gazing to the left, with grey, powdered hair and swearing a red military coat with dark facings, gilt buttons and gilt epaulettes. There is what appears to be a gilt sword hilt at the bottom right of the picture. Sky effect in the background. Killerton, Devon (Accredited Museum)
