Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex (1526 – 1583)

British (English) School. Oil painting on panel, Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex (1526 – 1583), British (English) School, circa 1575/80. A half-length portrait, turned slightly to right, gazing at spectator, reddish hair, moustache and short beard, wearing a flat bonnet with a row of jewelled brooches and a circular brooch with St George? which holds a red plume. He wears a buff doublet which has been pinked and panned with a high collar which is fastened with jewelled buttons, a small white ruff opened in the front and ruffed cuffs, over this he wears a black cloak with high fur collar, the sleeves of which are scattered with jewelled brooches, he also wears a gold jewelled chain from which is suspended the ‘Lesser George’ the badge of the order of the Garter, he holds with his right hand his white rod of office of Lord Chamberlain.
