British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) (after John de Critz), British (English) School, early 17th century. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing leather armour with gilt embellishments, whiteruff and collar, red breeches with geometric gold pattern. Holding sword in left hand, and a pike in his right hand. Blond hair and moustache. Helmet with white plumes on stand at left. Inscribed in red paint in top right corner 'Sir Philip Sidney Knight, Lord Governor in Zeeland, in Letters and Armes famous for Vertue and Fidelitie. The example of his time hurt in giving charge before Zvtphen whereof he dyed the 30 yeare of his age, Ao 1536'. Gilt label on frame 'Sir Philip Sidney, Zucchero'. After a portrait type established by John de Critz around 1585 of the poet-soldier, who died at the siege of Zutphen. Blickling Hall, Norfolk (Accredited Museum)
