Photograph taken on the 13 June 1885 of the launch party for the cruiser Panther, the first vessel built by Sir W.G. Armstrong Mitchell and Co. Ltd., at Elswick shipyard, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. 'Panther' was built in 1884 for the Austro-Hungarian navy. She was the first ship to be built at Armstrong's Elswick shipyard. This photograph shows the launch, at which Armstrong himself was present. He is standing on the platform wearing a top hat, next to the lady in the white blouse.
