Music was an important inspiration for John Tunnard's paintings. In this picture, stringed shapes suggest the curving forms of musical instruments. Colour changes within forms make them seem to move forward and back in space. This allowed Tunnard to suggest the multi-layered, repeating forms of music. The strange interlocking shapes of the picture were also strongly influenced by the Surrealist movement of the 1930s. The picture's scraped-down surface is due to Tunnard's feeling that texture was a distraction from visual harmonies;
