The steam tug 'Rescue' is shown towing the brig 'Rapid' of Shoreham into the southern entrance of Sunderland Harbour, after the 'Rapid' lost her mast in a storm on October 29th, 1880. The captain of the 'Rescue' was Robert Lumley Cook. The dark storm clouds are rolling back, but the sea is still rough, and the ships are pitching over the waves as they enter the harbour. John Hudson was a Sunderland artist. He began his career as a shipwright, and later became a painter of ship subjects;
