On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "No 6 Durie Lane has for generations been traditionally known as the Duke of Atholl's house. As elsewhere stated, Mr Kneale in his 'guide' remarks that the house was lent to the Duke from time to time by its lady-owner. Recently (1934) Mr Philip Caine has had access to papers that put a different complexion on the matter. The fourth Duke actually owned and occupied what is now the Douglas Hotel. There is proof of that. This Duke in one of his numerous letters of complaint to the British Ministry, says that he 'endeavoured to render habitable small houses purchased in this Isle, which after fitting up, I found not to answer.' Houses in the plural, makes it possible to reconcile the claims of the Douglas Hotel and Durie House."
