Still Life with Glass Jar and Silver Box, 1914 (oil on cardboard)

Winifred Gill (1891 - 1981) This still-life was painted on the back of a laundry box top, which bears a label dated 12 November 1914. Although once assumed to be by Duncan Grant, the laundry’s address near Gill’s in Sussex strongly suggests the attribution to her. Its stylistic similarity to Grant’s work was typical of the shared visual language adopted by artists working at the Omega Workshops in London, an avant-garde decorative art centre. Gill played an important part in keeping the Omega going, running the salesrooms as well as executing many of the designs.
