Image description: The Commander-in-Chief's Visit to Abbottabad, 25 May 1946. Photograph by Mela Ram and Sons India, 1946. Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, Commander-in-Chief India, presented the Military Medal to Lance-Naik Buchan Singh, 6th Battalion, The Frontier Force Rifles, during a visit to the Regimental Centre. Buchan Singh was awarded the decoration for the part he played in the crossing of the Gari River in Italy on 11-13 May 1944. The crossing was part of the operation which broke the Gustav Line, a series of German defensive positions north-west of Naples, thus allowing the Allies to push northwards.
