Grave marker of Trooper Lancelot Belcher, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), killed in action, Falaise, Normandy, 1944.
Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.
The 3 County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) War Diary records an attempt by C Squadron to cut the main road into the town of Falaise on 16 August 1944. One troop of tanks attempted to rescue the crews of some carriers that had been knocked out. One tank was hit by a Bazooka and brewed up. While no names are given of the dead and wounded, there is mention of 1 OR [Other Rank] killed, which is probably Trooper Belcher.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives the age of Lancelot Harry Herbert Belcher at his death on 16 August 1944 as 26, and he is recorded as being buried at the Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery.
From an album of 211 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
