Colonel (later General) Sir James Archibald Hope, in general officer’s dress uniform, 1835 circa. James Hope (1785-1871) joined the Army in 1800 and served with the 26th (Cameronians). He saw extensive service in the Peninsular War (1808-14) as a staff officer to Lieutenant-General Sir John Hope (later 2nd Earl of Hopetoun), then as an aide-de-camp to General Thomas Graham, and finally as an assistant adjutant-general. In 1813 Hope was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and in 1814 he transferred to the 3rd Foot Guards, with whom he served until 1839. He was promoted major-general in 1841 and served as a staff officer in Lower Canada from 1841 to 1847. In 1851 he became a lieutenant-general in 1851 and was made general in 1859.
