Major John Carter with British and Italian intelligence officers, 1918. Photograph, World War One, Italy (1915-1918), 1918. Formerly of MI5, in March 1918 Carter in Rome with the Special Intelligence Section of the Italian Expeditionary Force. Initially he was engaged in countering German and Austrian espionage and subversive activity in Italy, but in June 1918 he began parachuting agents behind enemy lines on the Austrian-Italian front. From 34 photographs and one postcard collected by Lt Col John Fillis Carré Carter whilst serving in British Army Intelligence in Rome, during the Italian campaign, 1917-1918.
