Image description

During Captain Cook's first visit to New Zealand, the ship's illustrator (Sydney Parkinson) recorded examples of the native tattoo called Moko. Moko is a linear form of tattooing worn by both men and women as a sign of status. Originally Moko were carved into the skin by Uhi (chisels) and then rubbing the ink into the open wounds - creating grooves. After the Europeans arrived, sailors brought metal to the Maori, which put them in a position to adopt the stick method that was found in other parts of Polynesia.
