1920//Oil on canvas
In 1899, Repin published in the press a sharp criticism of one of the greatest Finnish painters of the time, Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931). Later, he completely changed his mind, sorry to have been so negative about him. The two men met in 1920. Gallen-Kallela's appearance is very pleasing to Repin, who recognizes in him “the face and temperament of a Zaporogue.” The Finnish artist poses here wearing the brown uniform he wore during the Finnish civil war, in the camp of whites, opposed to the Reds. The portrait was made in a single session. Its unfinished appearance reinforces its expressiveness.
