William Matvyn Wright studied at the Royal College of Art and served in the Auxiliary Fire Service in the Second World War. The War Artists Advisory Committee noticed his work at the Fireman Artists exhibition showing at the London Fire Brigade Headquarters in 1941, subsequently purchasing some art and commissioning Wright in 1943 to make a picture of a Fire Guard Training School.
