Video description

Footage showing colonial domestic life in Allahabad (Prayagraj), and including shots of leaving Allahabad station, journeys by train and ship, scenes in Benares (Varanasi), Nicola's wedding (this is Nancy Vernede's sister and she was bridesmaid), and horse-racing at Lucknow. This film was taken by Lady Kendall, wife of Sir Charles Kendall, High Court Judge in Indian Civil Service. (00.00 to 03.55) The footage begins showing a sign which reads Mr Justice Kendall I.C.S. Quick cut footage shows the Kendalls' home, gardens, servants, oxen being led to a well, the lawn being mowed, then the Kendalls family (Clare and Barbara) and a group of Indian people (children and adults). A British family relax with a gramophone in the shade and walk in the garden. Kendall's car is shown, and Barbara plays croquet with a man. British couples play tennis against one another. Indian men sit atop decorated elephants, and a British VIP arrives and mingles with Indian dignitaries. (03.56 to 04.47) Two young Indian boys walk with an older Indian boy. Indian men work with two pairs of oxen to draw water out of a well. Creator: Lady Isabella Clare Kendall
