Image description

U.S. pilot Gail Halvorsen shows the thumbs-up from the cockpit of his C-54 Sky master bomber after he landed at Berlin's Tempelhof airport May 11. Hailverson was one of the pilots of the so-called "candy bombers" which supplied West-Berlin with vital supplies such as food, fuel and medicines that helped to defeat the Soviet blockade in 1948 and 1949. U.S. President Bill Clinton will visit the reunified Germany on May 13 and 14, to mark the 50th anniversary of the American and British Airlift. RKR
