Image description

Brazilian surfers Savio Carneiro (R) and Sandro Buguelo ride the thunderous "pororoca" tidal bore wave during the national "pororoca" circuit final on the Mearim River, some 30 km inland from the sea in the Amazonian jungle, near the northern Brazilian city of Arari in Maranhao state, April 19, 2003. The word "pororoca" comes from the Amazonian indigenous phrase meaning "destroyer, great blast." The feared and thunderous waves capsize boats and wash away nearly everything in their path twice each day. The phenomenon begins when ocean tides reach the shallow river water flowing out at the mouth. It can be heard two hours before it arrives and can produce waves of several meters, moving at speeds of up to 30km per hour. Carneiro won the circuit and Buguelo captured second place.
