Image description

Brazilian surfers Savio Carneiro (top) and Sandro Buguelo ride the thunderous "pororoca" tidal bore wave during the national "pororoca" circuit final on the Mearim River, some 30 kilometers inland from the sea in the Amazon jungle, near the northern Brazilian city of Arari in Maranhao state, April 19, 2003. The term "pororoca" comes from the Amazonian indigenous term meaning "destroyer, great blast." The feared and thunderous waves have capsized boats and washed away most anything in its path twice daily. The phenomenon begins when ocean tides reach the shallow river water flowing out at the mouth. It can be heard two hours preceding it and can produce waves of several meters, moving at speeds of up to 30km per hour. Carneiro won the circuit and Buguelo captured second place.
